Day 12 & 13: MOOOOD!!

For the last leg of our trip, we planned to go to New York. We didn't have anything we REALLY wanted to do until we were walking about Saks Fifth Avenue and saw this Diane von Furstenberg caftan. It was so gorgeous, and I realized making my own caftan wouldn't be too difficult. The boyfriend suggested we go to Mood in NYC to get fabric to make a caftan--and I almost died. I've been a huge fan of Project Runway for years; since the second season. What a great idea! So now we had a plan.

After lots of crazy traffic, pedestrians, and parking issues, we finally made it to the garment district. An older gentleman shopkeeper, who has clearly seen my kind before, saw us hovering around the office building containing Mood and told us it was upstairs. Should have known!

Being inside Mood was so cool! I was in the same building as Tim Gunn! *Swoon!*

Picking out a fabric was so difficult. I have no idea how the designers can make TRIM decisions in half an hour, let alone a fabric for one or more looks. Seriously, though, their trim section is amazing and huge.

I can say I met a celebrity in NYC: Swatch! You can catch little peeps of him here and there on Project Runway when they go to Mood. He was just wandering around the store like he was navigating a party at his house. Then he took a nap at the foot of the stairs--like a boss.

After a very nice man (the floor manager, I guessed) helped me cut my fabric and trim, I got a rewards card, too! Haha. Extra souvenir, I guess.

So here's the fabric I got! It's a jersey knit--a really cool, wide pattern. It's almost like peacock feathers, but not quite so literal. I haven't decided how I'm going to orient the pattern--something to consider.

I'll take better pictures soon--these are just to give you an idea. The colors are so rich in person!

And here's the trim I got--I went with some rocker-ish studs to give some balance to the bohemian vibe inherent in a caftan. I'm pretty excited about designing my first piece! I'll keep updating on the progress of that as it goes.
